Chancery Lane Project guidance: Using contracts to comply with California's climate reporting laws

22 August 2025

The Chancery Lane Project – an initiative which supports organisations in using legal documents to take action on climate change – has released pilot guidance for ensuring compliance with California’s climate disclosure laws (SB 253 and SB 261) through contract clauses.

Its guidance, still in the beta stage, provides companies with a flexible framework for embedding the GHG emissions and climate risk reporting obligations into their supply chain policies and contracts.

The beta guidance will be updated to reflect the outcomes of the California Air Resources Board’s rulemaking process to implement SB 253 and SB 261, while stakeholders are encouraged to provide their feedback on how the guidance can be improved.
