ChemSec: Most EU chemical companies not reporting on substances of concern

Out of 13 large EU chemical companies that reported under the CSRD this year, only three - Bayer, Lanxess and Merck – reported on substances of concern in line with the ESRS, according to an assessment by the International Chemical Secretariat (ChemSec).

The other nine companies either claimed that substances of concern are not material, omitted the topic entirely or do not report fully in line with the pollution standard (ESRS E2).

Sonja Haider, head of sustainable finance at ChemSec, said it is “absurd that chemical companies can argue that their production and use of hazardous chemicals aren’t material to their environmental impact”.
