The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have provided an update on their ongoing project to develop a joint, co-branded corporate standard for carbon accounting.
The two organisations plan to launch an integrated public consultation on the draft standard in Q2 2027.
In September last year, the ISO and GHG Protocol announced a strategic partnership to harmonise and co-develop standards for measuring and reporting GHG emissions. A joint working group was then established in April this year.
The draft consolidated standard will bring together the requirements set out in the ISO’s emissions standard (ISO 14064-1) and the GHG Protocol’s respective standards for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions accounting and for market instruments.
GHG Protocol CEO Tim Mohin stated: "A consolidated corporate standard represents a significant step toward integrating and harmonising greenhouse gas accounting across the world.”
“For the organisations applying these standards to measure their greenhouse gas emissions, a single corporate standard will simplify reporting, reduce duplication, and provide greater consistency across markets and jurisdictions,” he added.
