LSE's Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment has published its annual climate litigation ‘snapshot’ report, noting that 3,600 climate cases have now been filed across 62 countries, including first-ever filings in Grenada, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Singapore and Zambia.
The analysis, authored by Joana Setzer and Catherine Higham, found 249 new cases were filed in 2025, with the US remaining the largest jurisdiction by volume, followed by Brazil, Australia, the UK and Germany.
More than 50 strategic climate-aligned cases were filed against companies during the year, spanning energy, finance, transport, real estate and consumer goods, with state-owned enterprises and financial institutions named as defendants in at least 42 of them.
The report highlights the growing maturity of climate litigation, its expansion into new geographies and actors, coordinated pushback against climate action and litigation, rising complexity tied to transition policy trade-offs, and the challenges associated with implementing climate rulings.
