Monash University benchmarks Australian modern slavery disclosures

Researchers at the Monash Centre for Financial Studies have published an assessment of modern slavery statements issued by the 100 largest Australian-listed companies (ASX 100) this year.

They found overall improvements, with 65% companies given an A-grade score for their disclosures, up from 56% last year. While 5 companies received E and F-grade scores and 6 statements were downgraded compared with last year, 13 statements were given an improved grade for their 2025 disclosures.

Previously an area of weakness, disclosures on the effectiveness of programmes to combat modern slavery have improved significantly in the last five years. Over three quarters of the companies provided good detail on their assessment activities and included specific KPIs in their statements.

Across the ASX 100, disclosures on grievance and remediation, supply chain mappings, risk exposure assessments and remain areas for further improvement. The researchers also noted that supply chain disclosures remain Tier 1 remains a challenge for several sectors.
