Study: Corporate sustainability disclosures lead to greater financial analyst coverage

An academic study has found that large multinational companies attract more following from financial analysts if they issue standalone sustainability disclosures.

The study - undertaken by Chi Keung Man of the University of Aberdeen and published in the International Journal of Finance - assessed financial analysts' coverage of the world's largest 500 companies by market capitalisation between 2008 and 2012 and the companies' disclosure practices in that period.

It found that financial analysts were more likely to follow companies that obtained third-party assurance on their disclosures, released more sustainability information or provided greater quality sustainability-related disclosures.
