Tshegofatso Modise appointed PIOB chair

02 October 2025

Tshegofatso Modise has been appointed as the new chair of the Public Interest Oversight Board (PIOB), replacing Linda de Beer in the role.

The PIOB is responsible for appointing members to the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) and the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA) and overseeing both boards’ standard-setting activities.

Modise has served as a PIOB member since 2022. She is the executive head of governance, risk and compliance at Debswana Diamond Company and was previously head of risk and assurance at De Beers.

De Beer has served as PIOB chair since 2020, overseeing the design and implementation of the 2020 Monitoring Group Recommendations. She highlighted that the organisation “has gone through a significant process of 'corporatising' its processes and clarifying how we think about the public interest”, over the last five years.

IESBA chair Gabriela Figueiredo Dias and IAASB chair Tom Seidenstein issued a joint statement on the appointment: “Modise brings deep experience in governance, risk management, and the accountancy profession, and we look forward to working with her to advance the public interest through strong, globally accepted assurance and ethics standards.”

“The IAASB and IESBA share with the PIOB a commitment to enhancing trust and confidence in the audit and accountancy profession and the information it provides to stakeholders worldwide. Under Modise’s leadership, we are confident that our close collaboration with the PIOB will continue to strengthen the international standard-setting system and deliver standards that serve the global public interest,” the joint statement reads.
